Last year I was invited to join in on a really cool blog hop floating around the blogosphere called ‘Why I Write‘. I really enjoyed getting involved and sharing my story. Sitting down and thinking about why I write was a fascinating process and the best part was that it reminded me why I love writing so much.
These days I’m lucky to fit in a few trips each year and along with food, travel experiences have become quite a big focus here at vegeTARAian. I thought it would be fun to start a blog hop, so we could all share what we love about travel.
It’s super easy to join in, and I sure hope you do! Share your story by simply linking to your blog post, answering the questions below. If you’re not a blogger you won’t miss out – just leave a comment at the bottom of this post.
Why do you travel?
Truth be told, I’m addicted to travel. I love the adventure of it, every aspect of it excites me. Researching a destination, determining the best route to take and which places to visit, arriving and exploring the sights, sounds and smells of a new city, getting to know the people and of course, sampling the local cuisine. I’m not into rushed, hectic travel – I much prefer a relaxed style where I can take each day as it comes and go with the flow.
I’m also grateful for what travel has given back to me because I certainly wouldn’t be the person I am today had I not experienced so many different cultures, seen breathtaking landscapes and visited incredible relics, spoken to people with fascinating, sometimes harrowing pasts, learnt firsthand about local cuisines and attempted to communicate – sometimes very badly! – in different languages. Traveling makes me admire and appreciate both the places I visit and how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful country. And it’s not over yet friends, not by a long shot. There are still so many places I have a yearning to see.
What are the most memorable places you’ve visited?
It’s so hard to pick just one! Some of the destinations I’ve loved recently are the serenity of spending a night aboard a boat on Halong Bay in Vietnam, the laid back pace (and fabulous food) of Taormina in Sicily and rich history of York in England.
I have fond memories of a bus trip my sister and I took from Los Angeles to Mexico when we were teenagers. As our first overseas trip it was a big culture shock and it took a little getting used to but once we got the hang of things, we were able to enjoy what little time we had in such an interesting country. As an adult with more worldly experience, I’d love to return and see more of what Mexico has to offer.
Where is the next destination on your wish list?
Right now I’m dreaming about a winter road trip across the North Island of New Zealand. I went over ten years ago to ski down south in Queenstown – which was impressively dazzling – and I’d really like to experience the Maori culture. I’m also craving visits to India and Sri Lanka to be immersed in the crowds, spices and colour.
If you had unlimited time and money, where would you spend more time?
Even though I’ve been to Japan three times, there is still so much more of it I want to see. I would love to learn how to speak fluent Japanese, spend time with relatives and see a lot more of this fascinating, beautiful country that is so full of contradictions. I’d also love to spend time exploring Europe as I’ve hardly touched that part of the world.
