Oh June, it’s been a good month for vegetarian eats. Let’s crack on – here’s a few of my favourite meals.
Bad Hombres in Surry Hills is a Mexican joint that recently went all veg. Woohoo! Naturally I was way keen to check it out. For me the great thing about eating at a vegetarian restaurant (aside from being able to have ANYTHING on the menu) is asking the server select the dishes. They are only open for dinner and the dark interior suits evening dining. The charred corn and amazing baked cauliflower were total standouts. I had such a great meal that I’m already planning to visit again. Arrrriba!
On a cold weekday morning I stopped for a quick bite at Cafe Oratnek in Redfern. I love this cosy little Japanese-inspired cafe. As I was rushed for time, I went with a thick slice of banana bread with kuromitsu (Japanese sugar syrup) butter which was a lovely treat. Next time I’m keen to stay longer and check out their lunch menu.
Out in the back streets of Blacktown, at a small suburban strip of shops, is a neat little cafe called The Old Boy Espresso. A friend who lives in the area told me about it and I’m so glad she did. Once inside, you could easily be fooled into thinking you were in a trendy inner west suburb (without having to trek into town). The menu is simple and kitchen is small but by golly the food is full of flavour. I went for breakfast and had the mushroom and crispy kale on sourdough. It was so good (as was the service), that I was back there a week later! Ain’t it great when you find something amazingly good that’s not too far from home?
