August, you’ve been alright. I had loads of great eats and looking back, I think I did a good job of covering loads of cuisines! Here are my favourite veg eats for the month.
My first visit to Tramsheds Harold Park was for an impressive Italian feast at Flour Eggs Water, where strips of freshly-made pasta hung from inside the window. I had a beautiful mushroom ravioli, sitting in a lovely mushroom sauce, which was perfect with an Italian pinot grigio. Handmade pasta is a fine art and I always appreciate those who take the time to make their own. It’s so light and lovely and way better than the dried packet stuff. The layered chocolate dessert was a treat – it was served in a coffee cup which made digging into the layers a real surprise.
Bronze Kiosk is a busy beachside café at Mona Vale, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. This pet-friendly eatery is a great spot for breakfast, visited by lots of locals and their canine friends. As we sat outside listening to the morning waves rolling in, I enjoyed a plate of toast topped with mushrooms and spinach, and haloumi instead of eggs. They’ve also got bubbly on the menu so we figured why not, because the weekend is an excellent excuse to celebrate. I’m tipping this joint is super busy in summer, I’m glad I got to stop by before the warmer weather hits.
Sadly I can’t have a ramen bowl at Ramen Zundo in World Square (the soup stock isn’t veg) but that doesn’t mean I can’t stop by for lunch. They do a generous teriyaki tofu set with miso soup and a side salad. Oishii!
In the heart of Sydney I discovered a great vegetarian thali, at Masala Bowl. It’s loaded with curries and rice, naan bread and a pappadum, raita and pickle and a salad and dessert. I’ll have a bit of everything please!
I know I’ve spoken about these guys before, but it is legit one of my favourite Mexican joints. On a weeknight dinner with girlfriends, I introduced them to vegetarian restaurant Bad Hombres in Surry Hills. Having been before I was able to recommend the amazing grilled corn and the baked cauliflower with cashew cream and Chinese pancakes (my favourite). We also drank margaritas and shared the black beans and mushrooms with rice. For dessert we shared the creamy Jasmine rice pudding with boozy tequila strawberries. The food is ace and the drinks are great. Take your meatasaurus pals. Trust me, they’ll love it.
On a visit to Enmore, I stopped in at Shenkin Kitchen for lunch. A refreshing strawberry and basil frappe, followed by a healthy bowl of roasted vegetables, hummus and chickpeas (which inspired me to create something similar at home).
