The Gate, Islington

On my visit to London, having a meal at The Gate was something I was very much looking forward to. Thankfully it was quite close by, just a short bus ride from where I was staying in Islington.

The Gate is a vegetarian restaurant (with a lot of vegan dishes) and a menu that changes seasonally. Being July, our visit is for the summer menu. My sister Amy and I went on a Monday night and shortly after we arrived every table was occupied. Looks like we had come to the right place!

The Gate, Clerkenwell After settling in with a bottle of white wine, we took a look at the menu. We quite liked the idea of the mezze (a choice of one, three or five dishes) so we went with five dishes to share. This was a clever way to have a taste of a few different things. We had the mushroom ceviche, sweet potato and pomegranate salad, tempura artichoke with aioli, broad bean falafel and a Thai salad. They were all really good – the artichoke was my favourite.

Entrees at The Gate, Clerkenwell For my main I had the wheat tortillas – one with sweet potato, sweet corn, goats cheese, chilli, lime and coriander and the other with beetroot, feta and parsley. Both were accompanied by sour cream, guacamole and a black bean and red pepper salsa. This was a big hit for me, so many flavours and textures!

Tortillas at The Gate, Clerkenwell Amy’s main was the wild mushroom polenta which was triangles of pan fried polenta and wild mushroom cream sauce and rocket. I’m a big fan of mushrooms so I admit that I did have a little envy because it looked so good.

Dinner at The Gate, Clerkenwell We had a lovely night and were nearly the last diners to leave. I also bought one of the cookbooks – The Gate Easy Vegetarian. It’s got some beautiful recipes so I’ll be sure to share my makes with you.

It was a wonderful meal, I would definitely go again. Just another excuse for me to take another trip to London!
