Fact: I love mushrooms. Not just a bit, a LOT. Yes yes, I know, most of you won’t find this anything new. But for new friends (Hello and welcome!) who have not yet learnt about my mushroom love, check out these fun vegan mushroom rolls or this hearty mixed mushroom risotto.
Being vego means having to do your research. When meatasaurus pals say “Let’s go out for burgers and beers!” I immediately wonder if there will be a decent veg friendly option. This is when the investigator in me kicks in and I start checking out websites and social media channels to make sure I don’t end up with just a plate of hot chips (I’ll admit I DO love chips but not for an entire meal!)
My mind is completely put to rest the first time I meet up with friends at Mary’s, a hip drinking hole in Newtown. The menu is quite small with only a few bar-snack type choices and one of them is the ‘Shroom Burger with fries. That’s right, mushroom in a burger. Oh happy day!
The burger contains a large field mushroom, cooked on the grill with garlic butter and a bit of salt, presented in a soft flat white bun with cheese, lettuce and mustard. The burger arrives wrapped in waxy paper and served in a plastic basket with shoestring fries, American diner style. It’s simple and it’s REAL tasty.
I enjoyed the burger so much, that I went back with a friend this week to have another one – true story. And later this month I’m looking forward to trying another mushroom burger – at the newly opened Shake Shack in London.
One of the great things about eating out is discovering dishes that inspire me to try something similar at home. And I’m pretty sure this is something I could actually pull off. Mushroom burger party at my place!
