Orto Trading Co, Surry Hills

Sydney was wet and gloomy on the weekend but that made it all the more fun to catch up with blogger gal pals Love Swah and The Adventures of Miss Piggy.¬†At Swah’s suggestion, and because it’s her favourite, we went to Orto Trading Co in Surry Hills for brunch.

As the building is on a corner they also have a large undercover outdoor section for seating. With large bi-fold glass doors, I can imagine how light and airy the cafe is on a summer day with the doors open, doubling the size of the dining area.

Orto-Trading-Co-01 We started with some fresh juices – I had the orange, apple and strawberry and Swah had the pineapple, passionfruit, apple and lime. I have a juicer so I’m always keen to find new flavour combinations to try at home.

Orto-Trading-juice For brunch Mel and I shared our dishes which is genius as I always want to try more than one thing on the menu. I went with avocado, tomato and basil on sourdough with a side of mushrooms and Mel got the tomato, olive tapenade and goats cheese on miche.

Orto-Trading-Co-3 Perfect sized dishes and really fresh flavours. There weren’t any veg lunch menu options but I’m sure they could alter an existing menu item if requested.

Orto-Trading-Co-4 We also each ordered a piece of grilled corn with chilli lime butter and grated cheddar because who can resist that?!

Orto-Trading-Co-5 When we’d finished (and maybe because we were sat near the kitchen) one of the kitchenhands gave me a little sample of fairy floss wrapped around a candy striped straw. We all tasted it and tried to guess the flavour – I thought it was ginger – we were all wrong! It was orange blossom.

I really like Orto and I can see why it gets so busy. The atmosphere is relaxed and the food is uncomplicated and tasty. I could totally see myself having brunch there regularly if I lived nearby. I’d love to go back on a sunny day and sit outside by the pot plants. I’d also love to check out their dinner menu! Ahh so many places to visit, so little time…
