A few days ago, I went to my first No Lights No Lycra session. It turned out to be the most fun (and sweatiest) workout I’ve ever done. True story.
For years I’ve had a on-and-off relationship with the gym. When I’m in the zone, I make it a routine to go a few times a week. Unfortunately life isn’t always so accommodating with free time. I recently changed jobs which has vastly increased my days so now when I get home, I just want to be a blob on the couch.
There’s something about exercising in a mirrored room that can be intimidating. There’s the feeling of needing to dress in the right gear, use the machines correctly and try to look fresh and cute while your muscles are screaming. Not to mention all the hot bods that make you feel inadequate. Ok, maybe that’s just in my head, but there’s no denying that the gym can be a bit daunting.
My sister raved about No Lights No Lycra, saying it was an expressive weekly workout, where you can completely let go. The concept is to go into a big room for an hour, and dance to music. It’s a completely solo affair as there’s no talking or communicating with others – you simply dance. Oh, and all the lights are out.
Dancing in the dark? Without anyone watching / seeing / judging? I was intrigued.
We arranged to go to a session and before we left the house, my sister offered to lend me a sports bra. I scoffed saying “Oh no I’m good, it’s not like I’ll be going crazy.”
We arrived at the hall and paid the $7 fee. The windows were blacked out and people of all ages and sizes were scattered around the room, limbering up for the workout. It looked like a very different affair to my experience of clubbing with friends, where us gals would casually and meekly dance in a circle around our handbags (while trying to look hot so we could catch the eye of a dreamy dude).
As the lights went out and the music started (Walk This Way by Run DMC and Aerosmith), it took a minute for my eyes to adjust. I could only see shapes moving and then it really hit me – no one was watching and it was OK to let go. I danced, bounced, clapped and jumped around to the tunes and before I knew it, the hour was over. The lights stayed off and we exited in a hot and sweaty mess.
At No Lights No Lycra, the days of self-conscious dancing are gone.
You don’t have to worry about being coordinated or in time to the music, or having the right dance moves – you just do what you feel. It’s your time to go crazy! It’s really freeing to let loose, and now I’m keen to find one near home.
Note to self: DO wear a sports bra to reduce the chest jiggles.
Working out can seem like a chore but when it’s fun, it doesn’t at all feel like hard work.
