Melbourne sweets

During my day of exploring on Chapel Street, I ducked into a side street to check out the highly recommended Prahan Market. It’s a beautiful fresh food market full of colour and bright produce, inside an undercover world that appeared to be a mini suburb with paved roads and stalls instead of houses. It was so neat and tidy, not like some of the chaotic markets I’ve visited at home. If I lived nearby it would be a delight to shop there for my weekly fruit and veg.

I was thrilled to find the Mister Nice Guy pop up bakery at Prahan Market! Mister Nice Guy makes beautiful vegan cupcakes with organic ingredients that are kosher, dairy free and egg free. They also have gluten free options. I follow Mister Nice Guy on Facebook and am always drooling at the sound of their sweet treats. The day I visited they had created a new gluten free cupcake containing canned pumpkin mix (the same ingredient used for making pumpkin pie) found in a local US store. Naturally I had to buy one of these and a chocolate coconut cupcake to take away. They were SO good! For my fellow Sydneyites who think Melbourne is a little too far to go for a delicious cupcake, keep an eye out as Mister Nice Guy tells me they are looking to open up in the Glebe area. Hurrah!

I also stopped by the Burch & Purchase Sweet Studio in South Yarra, to pick up a few treats to take home. I bought the puffed quinoa and malted orange crumble (which the cashier tells me is great on top of porridge), the ‘Never Say Never Again’s (a pack of gorgeous chocolate biscuits with muscavado, sugar, coconut, white chocolate and orange) and my favourite – a jar of chocolate, caramel and hazlenut spread. Well now, wouldn’t that go nicely in a Peppermint Crisp Pie or Chocolate Caramel Tart? Yum!

One of the great things Melbourne does are hot jam donuts. Yes that’s right, HOT. I just love biting into a soft, sugar covered dome for a surprising explosion of warm and runny strawberry jam. Come on Sydney, why aren’t we doing this?!

There were so many other great places I wanted to visit, but time just ran away from me. It’s such a quick flight so there’s always next time, right?

  2. I love doughnuts. Have a bit of a weakness for hot ones too. Last time I had one was in Melbourne too!

  3. The hot jam doughnuts to which you refer are a Melbourne institution. The caravans selling these sugary delights are normally located around the Queen Vic markets. As kids we used to burn our tongues on the hot jam within!! Each city/town in our big country should hold onto their unique treats but I guess that’s wishful thinking …

  4. Hot jam donuts?? Sign me up! It’s been years since I’ve been to Melbourne and all your posts are making me want to plan a trip right NOW!
