Having Japanese background means it’s mandatory for me to like things like green tea, and thankfully I really do! When I was contacted by the folk at Kenko Tea, I was a tad excited to get a sample of their Japanese matcha tea to play with.
Matcha is packed full of antioxidants and nutrients. Nutritionally one cup of Kenko matcha is equivalent to TEN cups of regular brewed green tea. Now that’s impressive.
The cooking grade matcha powder is a fantastic minty green colour which is much darker when combined with water, making it fun to experiment with. I had a squiz at some of the recipes on the Kenko website and decided to try a healthy smoothie.
Green smoothies seem to be all the rage right now and this one is refreshing, summery and so easy to make. I had a bit of coconut water left over from a fantastic choc mint smoothie which was freezing in the ice cube tray. When it came time to make this matcha smoothie, the coconutty ice cubes also went into the mix for a little extra flavour.
- 1 tsp matcha powder, dissolved in warm water
- 1 large apple
- Juice from half a lemon
- Handful of coconut water ice cubes
- Small bunch of mint leaves
- Whiz until smooth.
- Pour and enjoy!

My new blend-friend has been quite handy in making healthy ice cream using frozen bananas as a base. I think matcha would be a great addition to ice cream!
So friends, what recipe would you add matcha powder to?
