I just got back from an amazing week in Japan, mostly spent skiing in Niseko, Hokkaido. This is the first of a number of blogs I’ll write about the fabulous food I ate and saw there!
One morning after breakfast I went for a stroll in the snow and came across a little cafe on a back street in Hirafu called Mariposa.
The cafe is very quaint inside – just a small counter and enough room for 2-3 people to sit. When you open the door you are engulfed with the aroma of freshly baked scones and muffins and quiet Japanese music playing on a small radio. Behind the counter is a small sink, a coffee machine and a mini oven where everything is baked. It has such a sweet atmosphere.
During my stay I visited Mariposa twice. The first time I dropped in to check the place out and buy a couple of muffins, the second time I took my Uncle and we ‘dined in’ for a hot chocolate and scone. Both times I was served by different and very hospitable staff.
On my first visit I was met by a very kind older man. I find it difficult to guess the age of Japanese people due to their great skin and minimal wrinkles, so I’m guessing this man was in his sixties (I’m probably way off!). His hair and moustache were snow white, he had very basic English and he was extraordinarily friendly. He delicately wrapped the muffins individually which such care – it’s a shame that we rarely get this attention to detail with our customer service in Australia.
The second time I was served by a lady, his wife perhaps? She also took great care with her service which is just so lovely to watch. To my delight the hot chocolate was made with real chocolate shavings – not chocolate powder you get here at home.
The muffins are made in small and large sizes. I only had small ones and they were more than enough. They were quite reasonably priced – you can buy 4-5 small muffins for around AUD$12.
Muffin flavours include orange cheesecake, strawberry condensed milk, green tea and white chocolate, blueberry cream cheese, lemon cream and cookie crumble.
If you are ever in Niseko I highly recommend that you visit this gorgeous little cafe. The staff are really friendly, the muffins are delicious and the cafe itself is adorable. I will be certainly be back on my next stay!
