Friends, I cannot tell you how excited I am! Lord of the Fries has hit Sydney!! With the slogan ‘We care a lot’ and menu items that are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and halal, LOTF are bound to make a LOT of Sydney-siders happy.
While the doors have opened, the official launch is not until this Thursday 29 August 2013. From midday to midnight LOTF Sydney will be giving away free fries and sauce to the first 200 customers. If you’re keen to get on down, check out the event on Facebook. I know where I’ll be on Thursday!!
Don’t know what LOTF is? Never fear friends! I chatted with co-founder Mark Koronczyk to find out more.
What was the inspiration behind creating delicious vegetarian fast food?
LOTF was created by myself and my now wife Mandy when we first met in Taiwan teaching English. She’s a vegetarian and I’m vegan and we bonded over our love of the humble chip. We were fascinated as to how one of the world’s most popular snacks (that happens to be vegetarian!) is prepared in different cultures (for example, the French Canadians love it with cheese and gravy and the Belgians with mayo). We wanted to bring this to the masses in an alternative way that differs from the usual fast food approach – food made with love not animals! We started creating fries made from locally sourced potatoes that were freshly cut and not frozen, cooked twice for crispiness with skins on in cottonseed oil with no trans fats. It’s time consuming and expensive to do it this way (which is why many of our competitors don’t!) but we don’t ever want to compromise on taste or quality. We also created the burgers, hot dogs and sides that are all vegetarian, kosher and halal with gluten-free and vegan options. Being accessible to all is a big part of our philosophy. We’re happy to be enjoyed by meat eaters and veggies alike and want to put taste first.
What has been the feedback to the existing stores in Melbourne?
We started out as a food van travelling to music festivals in 2004 (before food trucks were cool!) and people responded so well that they demanded a permanent store. We then went on to open seven stores in Melbourne and the feedback has been amazing over the years. We love our fans and they are an integral part of who we are as a business, they often inspire our thinking behind the business direction. We have met people who have LOTF for breakfast, lunch and dinner when they’re in Melbourne and fans who have a framed pic of themselves eating LOTF in their living rooms, it’s amazing and so true!
Is Sydney likely to see more LOTF stores popping up in the future?
Hopefully! We have been bowled over by the response from the Sydney-siders and there’s a real gap in the market there for fresh quality vegetarian fast food. We often get requests to open all over the place but we are very particular about where we open and who with so it takes a lot of time and consideration. We’d love to open in every city in Australia and overseas too someday. Keep your eye on Facebook for any updates!
On a recent visit to London I was surprised at how incredibly veg friendly their restaurants are. Do you think Australian eateries are becoming more accommodating of vegetarians and vegans?
We’re really happy to see more and more vegetarian and vegan options pop up all over the place and that the food industry is responding to the demand for more animal-friendly and health-conscious products. It’s great to see the flexitarian movement (part-time vegos) sweeping the nation and we’re proud supporters of Meat Free Mondays, encouraging meat-eaters to give up meat for just one day a week. We definitely think Australia as a nation tends to be more sensitive to alternative food options like vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, organic etc. It’s part of what makes us who we are!
Bravo for reducing meat consumption and showing Sydney (and the world) that veg food can be fun and tasty!
Thanks for your support Tara, we love your blog!
Veg friendly fast food, can you believe it?! Go on friends, admit it, you’re totally keen to visit the Lord – am I right? Well so you should be, and I have a fabulous treat for you!
