Welcome to Inspirational Interview – Fab 5. A regular feature where I share the story of a clever creative who inspires me, and I hope they’ll do the same for you.
In this issue I chat to Erin Rhoads from The Rogue Ginger, an earth-loving gal sharing advice for sustainable waste-free living with options for everything from shopping to travel.
I really admire Erin’s zero-waste lifestyle and her blog has made me really think about just how much we throw away and what I can do at home to make a difference.
Your blog is fab! Who or what inspired you to create The Rogue Ginger?
Thanks! Originally I was inspired to create my blog as a way to record travel adventures but it quickly turned into a blog about navigating how to live a plastic free life and create zero waste. Now my blog is focused on sustainability dedicated to sharing easy and accessible information for others.
What blogging milestone are you most proud of and why?
I was asked to contribute to a book about living plastic free due out in April next year by Beth Terry who is an authority on plastic free living. Sometimes I wonder if anyone is reading my blog then I get the most amazing opportunities like interviews with wonderful people like you so I can share my message a little further. I was also nominated for a Bupa blog award for Social Good which was great encouragement to keep going.
What is your favourite food memory?
What a tough question – there are so many, especially in Australia. Dining at Tetsuyas, Quay and Vue de Monde have all been wonderful experiences. We are spoilt with great food grown by dedicated and talented farmers in this country. But going abroad is probably where I collect easy to reach food memories, as food is a big reason why I choose to visit any country. I have been to over 50 countries so I will try to narrow it down.
The first night I landed in India we sat on the roof of our two star hotel and we were fed the most amazing feast. Enjoying ceviche in Nicaragua “cooked” from fish that was caught off the boat we were on for the day. Chomping on fried pickles in Memphis and generally any BBQ in the Southern States of America. Fish and Chips on the north coast of Ireland, enjoyed in our rental car while it rained buckets outside. Discovering Polish hot chocolate which to me, can not be surpassed. I could go on…
Who are the creative souls that inspire you?
My partner, known on my blog as the Builder. He inspires me with the simplest words. He has been a fantastic inspiration throughout my green shift and is the loudest member of my cheer squad. My family and friends have also been great inspiration also.
Dr Rose Mukankomeje Director General of Rwanda Environment Management Authority. She is kicking goals in her country by tackling plastic pollution and introducing sustainability programs that has seen Rwanda becoming one of the cleanest countries on the African continent. For a country that has been through grave acts of devastation it is nothing short of inspiring that they want the best for their people and planet.
I am also inspired by people who say I can’t do something because they makes me even more determined to find a plastic free alternative.
Toot your horn! What’s coming up next for The Rogue Ginger?
I am gearing up to release Plastic Free Living starter kits. People often ask me where and how to start when they make the decision to reduce their plastic footprint so I have decided to put together a box of items that will help people get started. It will contain everything I wish I had when I started. I am looking to begin selling these March 2015.
