Welcome to Inspirational Interview – Fab 5. A regular feature where I share the story of a clever creative who inspires me, and I hope they’ll do the same for you.
Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to writer, editor and marketing guru Christine Knight – the brains behind travel and family blog Adventure, Baby! Christine is a lovely gal (luckily for me she’s now Sydney based after an living in New York) and I spent time getting to know this fellow food lover and vegetarian at the ProBlogger conference this year.
If you’re into travel and you’ve got little ones, you’ll love Christine’s blog.
Your blog is fab! Who or what inspired you to create Adventure, Baby!?
I’ve been blogging on and off for about eight years about travel and as a diary, but I really started to blog more frequently when I became pregnant and moved with my husband to New York City. My daughter was born in Manhattan and we had a wonderful few years exploring New York together. At around this time, my blogging evolved to reflect the adventures we were having together as a family. I moved back to Australia in June 2014 and have kept blogging about our overseas and local adventures. The blog has also become home to my articles on parenting and freelance writing, which is my current career.
What blogging milestone are you most proud of and why?
I started blogging for fun and never dreamed that it would lead to the opportunities that it has. Purely as a result of starting this blog, I now have a freelance writing career than let’s me stay at home with my daughter and make my own hours, I’m a member of the Huffington Post blogging team, and I’ve been published in papers like the Wall St Journal. I’ve always believed that words can touch people and create change, and I hope that my small voice is touching hearts and helping people whether it be knowing they’re not alone when they have a tough day as a parent, or inspiring them to plan amazing trips with their kids.
What is your favourite food memory?
Cake! I love cake so much. When I was a child, my mum and I would make the most amazing birthday cakes together every year from the Australian Women’s Weekly Cookbook. They are some of my most treasured memories of childhood, and now I have my own daughter, it’s an experience I am trying to replicate with her. For her fourth birthday recently, we made our first birthday cake together with the three generations of women in my family – me, my mum and daughter. The cake was deliciously imperfect and my daughter was deliriously happy.
Who are the creative souls that inspire you?
My first thought is the pastry chefs I’m obsessed with. Adriano Zumbo was my first dessert love, and I also adore Anna Polyviou and Katherine Sabbath – innovative chefs who are changing the way we view desserts. I’m also inspired by too many photographers to name, but Max Dupain was my first photographic romance.
Toot your horn! What’s coming up next for Adventure, Baby!?
I have so much trouble focusing on one thing! I’m about to start a Periscope series with Jayne of Girl Tweets World sharing our experiences and advice as freelancers and bloggers. I’m also slowly plugging away at a book about our experience as an expat parent in NYC, and playing around with a few other creative ideas.
I would love to inspire people to live their every day as an adventure, both with their family, exploring the world, and also in their career. I hear time and time again about the challenges women face with work options after they have kids. I face the same challenges and try to address how I’m making a career and parenthood work for me on my blog, and hopefully in other channels soon, too. I certainly don’t hold all the answers but I want to share what’s been successful for me to help others in the same situation.
