Armory Wharf Cafe, Newington

I’ve tasted some excellent mushroom dishes recently – like this mushroom ragout and this mixed mushroom pappardelle – so it comes as no surprise that mushrooms are slowly featuring more often on Sydney menus. Hip-hip-hooray!

I popped down to a waterfront cafe for a dose of vitamin D with a mushroomy all day breakfast. The Armory Wharf Cafe, in Blaxland Riverside Park, overlooks Parramatta River and is next to a huge all ages playground. The park also has walking / bike trails so it gets quite busy on weekends and school holidays. I prefer to visit through the week when there’s a bit of sunshine and I’m in need of a little ‘time out’ from the office (although I am tempted by the variety of sweets on the dinner menu!)

Armory Wharf Cafe, Newington There’s something calming about spending time by the water – it makes me really miss living near the beach. At Armory I find it quite relaxing to sit outside, under the camouflage netting, even on a cool winter day. I order the confit field mushrooms with garlic and balsamic glaze on sourdough toast with sautéed spinach and creme fraiche. Sounds like a mouthful, right? Well it is, in more ways than one.

Armory Wharf Cafe, Newington Breakfast for lunch always makes me happy. This generous serve of flavoursome and juicy mushrooms is a great source of essential vitamins and minerals. The last time I had this dish the creme fraiche was already on top of the mushrooms so I was pleasantly surprised to see that they now serve the creme fraiche on the side so you can add it to your liking.

Armory is a lovely spot, no noisy traffic whizzing by, just the gentle hum of an occasional rivercat. One of the things I love about this place is the number of veg dishes on the menu. It’s always such a relief to have a lot of dishes to choose from.

  3. I have to thank mum for my mushroom craze. She is vegetarian for most part of the year (it’s a religious thing) and as such I have been able to appreciate the simpler things. Mushrooms are just so versatile. I have to say enoki and shitaki are my favourites!

  4. Thanks Tara for your patronage and review on your blog. The mushrooms on the all day breakfast menu go through the occasional tweak with the recipe ingredients to provide a little bit of variation to the dish which has remained a popular one for nearly 5 years. We certainly try and ensure that we have several vegetarian options on the menu which we do update every 3 to 4 months with the seasonal changes, so hope to see you back down some time in Spring when back from OS.

  5. Yum, I love mushrooms! I went to Japan recently and I got hooked on shitake mushrooms, they have a really unique flavour. I’ll have to try this restaurant when I’m in Sydney next! Thanks Tara :)
