In 2014 Tara Mathews completed a Graduate Certificate in Food Writing at the University of Adelaide – the only accredited food writing course in Australia.
Hello and welcome! I’m Tara – a writer, friend of animals, lover of food, vegetarian and editor of food and travel blog vegeTARAian.
People choose vegetarianism for different reasons. For me it means I don’t eat meat or seafood and have very little dairy (I occasionally indulge in cheese).
My decision for a vegetarian or compassionate lifestyle was predominantly about animals. I love all creatures and have always felt close to them, so it made sense for me not to eat them. The first I attempted being vegetarian lasted a few years and somehow I slipped up and slowly started integrating a little white meat back into my diet. It’s now been more than 10 years since I properly went veg. It’s so much easier these days as vegetarianism is becoming more popular and accepted…and there are loads of fantastic ‘vegetarian’ products around, too!
Being veg ain’t boring – it’s kind, delicious and fun!
The clincher for my veg life was reading Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. It took me a LONG time to read because I knew how much my life would be affected afterwards. The book, very matter of factly, explores the animal farming industry. While it didn’t attempt to sway the reader one way or another (which I really liked) I found it very powerful. No thanks to a vivid imagination, some parts were incredibly difficult to read. I’m glad I got through it and I’m grateful for the knowledge – I think it’s important for us all to know. I wonder how many other people have made life changing decisions – like the shift to a vegetarian lifestyle – simply from reading a book.
It’s important to note that this space is for everyone. I am NOT here to hate on meat eaters! Don’t panic people, I’m not going to lecture you or make you feel bad about your eating choices. I hope bust myths that being veg is boring, inspire fellow vegetarians and encourage meat lovers to consider introducing a few tasty veg dishes into their diet.
So, why a blog? Vegetarianism has a reputation of being a tad boring and difficult so I hope to make it more fun and interesting! I’ll share my experiences, tips and ideas, food options, great restaurants, tasty recipes, shopping, local and abroad travels, products and of course, lots of photos.
So whether you’re a meat eater, a vegetarian or somewhere in the middle, I hope to share a little something you will all like.
Ok, enough of the serious stuff. I’m so glad you’re here! Come on a delicious journey with me…it will be fun, I promise!
