I had such a memorable stay on the sapphire island. It was a fabulous experience and is a destination I’d absolutely visit again. For such a small jam-packed island and a population of over 20 million, Sri Lanka sure does deliver the goods.
It’s hard to believe that a country with eight UNESCO World Heritage sites including the age-old city of Sigiriya or Lion Rock, Dambulla’s impressive Cave Temple, the harbour town of Galle and the old fort and the sacred city of Kandy – is smaller than the size of Tasmania.
There are endless reasons why Sri Lanka is the ultimate holiday destination. Of course there’s fantastic culture and history to experience but there are also five simple reasons why you should go ahead and book that trip.
1. Incredible food
Rice and curry, kotthu or chop chop, string hoppers, spicy sambal, roti and dhal are just some of the flavourful dishes you’ll be keen to sample to help you discover your love for spice.
2. Animal encounters
You won’t have to go far to get up close with nature in Sri Lanka. Visit one of the many national parks, book a jeep safari and before you know it you’ll be up close with herds of big majestic elephants quietly grazing in the long grass.
3. Scenic train journeys
A long train ride may not sound exciting but when the view is of lush, rolling green hills, tea plantations and cascading waterfalls and the locals walk through the train carriages selling baskets of homemade idli, curry puffs and vadai snacks, this will make for a journey to remember.
4. Tea plantations
Take a trip up to a tea estate in the highlands and arrange a tour of a tea factory to learn about how the simple tea leaf makes it into a cup of the finest tea.
5. Unwind on the coast
With pristine beaches never far away, a few relaxing days by the water is a must for your Sri Lankan itinerary.
Have you ever been to Sri Lanka? I’d love to hear about your experiences from this wonderful and fascinating land.
